Aristo Sham Gold Medalist 2025 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition Aristo Sham appears by arrangement with the Cliburn. Overview A 29-year-old pianist from Hong Kong who won the Nancy Lee and Perry R. Bass Gold Medal at the Seventeenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, held May 21–June 7, 2025, at Van Cliburn Concert Hall at TCU and Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth, Texas. He also received the Carla and Kelly Thompson Audience Award, determined by more than 9,000 public votes, making him the first competitor in the 2025 field to take home both honors. The gold medal carried the Van Cliburn Winner’s Cup, and three years of career management support. 

Early Life and Musical Beginnings Sham grew up immersed in music from birth: his mother taught piano out of their Hong Kong home, and he has said, “I was enveloped in the environment of the piano even before I was born.” His parents noticed his intense curiosity about the instrument when he was a toddler, and he began formal lessons with another teacher at age three. By age ten, he was already competing and concertizing internationally. Despite his early prodigy status - he was featured in the 2009 Channel 4 (UK) documentary The World’s Greatest Musical Prodigies and has performed for royalty, including King Charles - he continued attending regular schools rather than focusing solely on music. Life After the Cliburn Sham's win generated an outsized response in his native Hong Kong, where he was featured in hundreds of news articles and interviewed by nearly every major media outlet in the months following the competition. He has said the experience gave him a platform to be a positive influence on classical music's profile in Hong Kong and beyond, noting that listeners told him his performances inspired them to return to the piano or attend a classical concert for the first time. Beyond music, his interests include travel, aviation, gastronomy, oenology, and language study. He is represented by Intermusica for general management.
